Live Music Venue
Skylark Café & Club, LLC
Skylark is a live music venue, restaurant, and art gallery in West Seattle with a capacity of 85 that attracts locals as well as performers from all over the globe and concertgoers from ‘the mainland’ (Seattle and environs).
Previous venues at this location had mostly sketchy reputations; longshoremen at the bar told us stories of heroin deals and knife fights going back decades! Foot traffic was and is nearly non-existent, so a large neon sign visible from the bridge was the first design task—along with kitschy ‘coming soon’ posters we plastered all over the peninsula to promote the opening night.
I advertised for bands in The Stranger once, and my inbox was never empty again.
Skylark pioneered the drag brunch concept in Seattle with a hostess who later appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race, featured popular bellydancing and open mic nights, and rotated artists and photographers monthly in the gallery. All ages shows, especially in collaboration with local music schools and camps, were an important part of our mission from day one.
Some of our performer-focused offerings:
we regularly linked to all band sites on our calendar so audiences could easily listen to samples ahead of attending, which was not industry standard at the time
we offered multi-track board recordings to all acts, even open mic performers, for a small fee
the Come As You Aren’t Halloween ‘competition’ remains a massive draw to this day
